Tithing Under Grace

There have been widespread debates when it comes to tithing under grace. Most say don’t tithe and others who tithe, usually do it out of obligation or tradition, and this ought not to be so. The tithe along with the Lord’s supper are elements of worship. Psalms 22:29, “All the prosperous of the earth shall eat and worship…” and what are they eating? Well, look at the preceding verses. A messianic Psalm prophesying of the suffering of Jesus and Jesus says I am the bread of life. But how is bread gotten? The grain is crushed and sifted countless times until it becomes fine flour, worthy of bread making. Jesus at the cross was crushed by the weight of our sins and suffered and died a violent death for us. And by His shed blood, we have the complete forgiveness of sins—justified by faith by His resurrection. Jesus when He instituted the Lord’s Supper says, “do this in remembrance of Me.” This means when we partake of the Lord’s Supper, we are to remember Him, reverence Him, consider Him, and relish in what He alone accomplished for us as our substitute or representative. Therefore, when the bread and wine are received after remembering the Lord and the cross, it has been received worthily and Jesus Christ our Lord is glorified—worship.

-Now my focus is the tithe, which is also another element of worship. The first mention of the tithe was in Genesis 14, which should be noted is before the law and given to Abram just before he was declared righteous by faith(grace)—the same covenant we are under today. That’s why we in Christ are called the seed of Abraham. Melchizedek who is a type of Christ came to Abram with bread and wine, just after Abram had gotten a great victory and was tired. Almost to refresh him. Whenever we judge God’s love for us from the cross and not our circumstances, we are walking in faith and are therefore we make God happy. Note that you’re already pleasing to God by virtue of being in Christ. But parents, just as you love all your children the same, yet whenever one of them does something special you’re delighted. It doesn’t mean you love one more and the other less. Anyway, Melchizedek refreshed Abram with the bread and the wine and blessed both God and Abram. Now you can see that Melchizedek brought the death of Jesus, but will God stop at death? NEVER! After the death of Jesus occurred, three days later that same Jesus was raised from the dead for our justification. Therefore, the response of Abram is so vital to understanding just how the tithe is an element of worship. Abram tithed to Melchizedek, responding with life. For you only tithe to someone who is living. David says to God, “shall the dead praise you?” Which means whenever you tithe to God, you declare that JESUS IS ALIVE!

-Remember, the tithe refers to 10% of your increase not just your salary. Abram tithed a tenth of ALL the spoils of the battle to Melchizedek. And looking at the principle of the seed, Jesus said unless a seed falls and dies, it remains a single seed. If Jesus came and dwelt among us; did the miracles and all the beautiful things that we needed, but never died for us then we are still in our sins. And in that context, Jesus remains a single seed. God’s mind is family that’s why He created the Church. It’s called the House of God. Yet, for God to have sons like Jesus who could worship properly, they’ll have to be partakers of His righteousness and holiness by faith. That’s why the bible says, we died with Christ and are also risen with Him. Yet we did not physically die, but He did! He is that one seed that went into the ground and came out as a full-grown tree—the True Vine. And in the Vine, we are connected to His life. A branch and a tree are one, hence 1 John 4 stating that as Christ is, so are we in this world. Hence when we give the tithe, we worship God who gave us new life in Christ by sacrificing His Son. Through death, Jesus defeated him who had the power of death. Further proof that the tithe signifies worship is from Leviticus 23:10-15. This passage describes the first fruits of grain gotten after the harvest being waved before the Lord as an offering to Him. From the grain, we get the fine flour mixed with oil—oil speaking of the anointing of the Holy Spirit, and then a drink offering of wine. Therefore, the tithe in the context of Leviticus 23 and the finished work of our Lord Jesus Christ represents a part of the whole harvest of the children of Israel given to God. And for us under grace, it’s a way just like the Lord’s Supper to be done in remembrance that He first gave His Son. We love because God our Father first loved us. We give because He first gave. In a couple of verses is a combination of the elements of worship; the tithe and the Lord’s Supper which are pictures of the death and resurrection of His Son. Just as Melchizedek brought the death and Abram responded with the resurrection. Jesus had to die and then be raised. Further proving that the bible is God’s breathe and Spirit-inspired from beginning to end.

-1 Cor 15:20, 23: Paul refers to Jesus as the first fruits of those who are asleep in the Lord and those who afterwards Christ’s which is all believers and those who will be saved. You can see that tithe as an element of worship glorifies Jesus who died for us and was lowly and meek even unto death. For just as a seed doesn’t resurrect or come out of the ground like a seed, but as a beautiful tree. So also, our Lord Jesus Christ having been raised from the dead had a better and more glorious form than when He walked on earth. Everything under grace is about worship and thanksgiving! And why do we worship and give thanks? Because of the wonderful work of Christ and the word of His grace all from a heart full of love for us. In Him and through Him we have the forgiveness of sins, redemption and justification. Our standing before God is now perfect because of what Jesus has done. For we are now one with Him.

-Why does the Lord love a cheerful giver? Note that the Lord loves all of us the same, but just as among the disciples there were different levels of closeness to Jesus, it’s the same thing today. We as believers, depending on our knowledge of God’s heart are either a John who calls himself the apostle whom Jesus loves or a Thomas who missed church one Sunday and became an unbelieving believer. The reason God loves a cheerful giver is that they’re cheerful. But why are they cheerful? I submit to you that their cheerfulness is a result of experiencing as a revelation, the love of God for them that was expressed at the cross. Grace is all about the Lord Jesus’ love, grace, strength, righteousness, and faithfulness.

-Malachi 3:8, 10: The people of God at that time robbed God of worship, and how did they do that? By refusing to bring the tithe and offerings. Again, you can see the order, God prioritizing life. But let’s reason with those people of that time. They were under a covenant of sin and death and condemnation. Which means they were constantly sin conscious, full of fears and worries, and under a lot of condemnation. So how then would people like this serve God with all their might and strength when they don’t even have any might and strength. This way of thinking was most likely common among the people, meaning a majority of them had a negative outlook on God. He wants to be everything to them, but the law says unless you obey I cannot bless you, but the power to obey is unavailable to them. Why then do we under grace who are under a better covenant, still sin conscious? Still condemning ourselves and others? Don’t you realize the grace of God is Jesus our Lord? Can’t you see that the lawgiver has fulfilled the law and He is greater than our sins? JESUS’ BLOOD HAS USHERED IN FOR US A BETTER COVENANT! The covenant of grace and peace. A covenant centred on the goodness of God in Christ Jesus which therefore makes God easy to praise! In fact, the goodness of God which leads us to a change of mind(repentance) causes us to worship God! We don’t need to have a fearful and negative expectation towards God! Jesus has exhausted ALL of God’s righteous anger for us. IT IS FINISHED!!

-In continuation, the Lord is telling His people to test Him with their tithe and offering—their substance of worship. Note that the “food in My storehouse” refers to the grain and wine and offerings that are brought to the temple. There are no insignificant details in the bible, so there’s a reason the tithe is mentioned first twice in that same passage in Malachi. The reason is that God prioritizes life. God is the author of light, life and love. God created this world with death, but when Adam sinned death came; for the wages of sin is death. Therefore with to conquer death, the issue of sin must first be taken care of and that’s exactly what happened at the cross. The whole words sin debt has been paid. So instead of preaching sin to those whose nature is sin, preach to the righteousness of God in Christ which is their solution out of bondage. Death has been defeated so our new life in Christ is characterized by thanksgiving and worship to Jesus for a great work well done.

-I will conclude with this, the tithe is not primarily to get rich, wealth is simply an effect. The tithe is to worship God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ in whom we have a new life which was received by grace through faith in what Jesus has done. And remember under the law, it says, “thou shall not test the Lord thy God” Yet! Still, under the law, God tells the people to test Him with their substance of worship because His heart is to bless the people. But to be able to see God asking you to give as Him wanting to bless you comes by revelation of His heart and grace wisdom. Wisdom is the principal thing, so don’t neglect to ask your Father in heaven for wisdom. God’s heart when He uttered to those words was to bless His people—exceedingly, abundantly, ABOVE! So, whenever you have a revelation of Jesus and you work for God or walk with God or do anything for God, it’ll be a response to the power of the Lord working in you. For as He works in, then you can work out your salvation. You align yourself with God’s constant supply of blessings, miracles, and even the Spirit when you’re grounded in justification by faith which is the faith that Paul in Galatians says, “faith works by love.”

From the moment you are grounded in the truth of justification by faith, and your identity in Christ, God can work in you and through you easily because you’re not self-conscious, Jesus conscious. Therefore, I end with this, DO NOT TITHE WITHOUT THE REVELATION OF JESUS IN IT. By doing so you’ll be missing the whole point of the tithe which is to testify that Jesus is alive!
